The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has urged police operatives to exercise extreme caution when handling firearms following a tragic incident where an officer was accidentally shot dead by his 10-year-old son.
The commissioner made this appeal during a visit to the Police Mobile Force 29 Squadron at Amansea, Awka, where the deceased officer, Inspector Amaechi Okolie, had served before the unfortunate incident.
Details of the Tragic Incident
Inspector Okolie was fatally shot two days ago when his son was reportedly handling his loaded service rifle. The incident also resulted in injuries to the officer's six-year-old son, who is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.
According to a statement by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state command's spokesperson, CP Orutugu visited both the squadron and the deceased officer's family to offer condolences and support.
Commissioner's Message to Officers
During his visit, the Commissioner described the Police Mobile Force as his "Alma mater" and emphasized the importance of adhering to police operational protocols, particularly in the line of duty.
"He emphasized the need for teamwork and encouraged the personnel to remain focused and dedicated to their duties, despite the loss," Ikenga stated in the release.
The Commissioner's visit demonstrates his commitment to the welfare and morale of personnel under his command, especially during difficult times.
Support for the Bereaved Family
In a show of solidarity, CP Orutugu provided financial assistance to the family of the deceased officer and offered prayers for the quick recovery of the injured child.
ACP Nasiru Adamu Kaila, Commander of the Squadron, received the Commissioner on behalf of the officers and expressed gratitude for his empathy during their time of grief.
