The paramount ruler of the Tiv Nation, Tor Tiv V, His Royal Majesty James Ayatse, has declared that the deteriorating security situation in Benue State is being politicized while clarifying that the attacks are not mere herders-farmers clashes but a "calculated genocide."

Speaking during President Bola Tinubu's stakeholders meeting in Makurdi on Wednesday, Tor Tiv categorically stated that the state is facing "a calculated, well-planned and full-scale genocidal invasion and land grabbing campaign by herder terrorists and bandits."

The President's visit follows the recent massacre of over 200 villagers in Yelwata community of Guma Local Government Area.

Political Exploitation of Crisis

In his address, Tor Tiv made shocking allegations about political elements within the state who he claims are exploiting the tragedy.

"Politicians in the state are busy politicizing the crisis, passing blames instead of joining hands to fight the crisis," he said. "We heard that there are some politicians who would even prefer that the crisis will worsen so that it will be a basis for the declaration of a state of emergency in Benue State."

The traditional ruler emphasized that "any politician that prays for more people to die is against the wishes of the people of Benue State."

Correcting Misconceptions

Ayatse strongly countered the common narrative surrounding the violence in Benue, stating: "We do have a grave concern with the misinformation and misrepresentation of the security crisis in Benue State. Mr. President, it is not herders-farmers clashes, it is not communal clashes, it is not reprisal attack."

He warned that such mischaracterization has led to inappropriate responses like suggestions to "remain tolerant, negotiate for peace, learn to live with your neighbours."

"Wrong diagnosis will lead to wrong treatment. We are dealing with something far more sinister than we think about. It's not learning to live with your neighbours; it is dealing with war," the Tor Tiv emphasized.

Appeal for Intervention

Highlighting Benue's historical contributions to Nigeria's unity, the traditional ruler reminded President Tinubu that many Benue indigenes died during the civil war to keep the country united.

"We paid the supreme price to keep this country united. Why should we be treated like this?" he questioned, adding that the Yelwata massacre is "just one of the series of several massacres in the state."

The Tor Tiv concluded his address with an appeal to President Tinubu to "end the genocide going on in Benue State and the insecurity in all parts of Nigeria," expressing confidence in the President's capability to address the situation.
