The Osun State Government has appealed for patience and continuous dialogue in resolving the protracted boundary dispute with neighboring Oyo State, following recent clashes between communities in both states.
During a courtesy visit by the leadership of the National Boundary Commission (NBC) to the Governor's Office at the Osun State Secretariat in Abeere on Monday, state officials emphasized the importance of peaceful engagement and interstate cooperation.
Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, representing Governor Ademola Adeleke, stressed that the solution to the boundary issue lies in political dialogue rather than confrontation.
"I believe the solution is within; it is political. Nobody knows when the land was created, but now we are fighting over it. At the end of the day, it's a round table solution," Adewusi stated.
Joint Assessment of Disputed Areas
The Deputy Governor revealed that Governors Adeleke and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had directed their deputies to visit the disputed areas for firsthand assessment of the situation.
"The two governors summoned me and my counterpart from Oyo to visit the area and assess the situation. When there's crisis, the leaders of the area are often blamed. That is why we are taking this seriously," he explained.
The visit comes after reported clashes between communities in Lagelu local government area of Oyo State and Iwo local government area of Osun State, which have raised significant concerns about regional stability.
NBC Commends Proactive Approach
Surveyor Adamu Adaji, Director-General of the National Boundary Commission, commended the Osun State Government for its proactive approach in handling internal boundary issues.
"We are here to appreciate His Excellency for his concern and support. After today's meeting, we will work jointly to review documents and see how we can resolve the remaining issues," Adaji said.
He emphasized the need for enlightenment and sensitization among residents on the importance of land boundaries, adding, "Our aim is to advise and appeal to the two states and the inhabitants to kindly cooperate with each other."
The NBC Director-General expressed optimism about resolving the dispute, noting that "The two governments are enthusiastic, and we believe this issue can be resolved amicably."
Casualty Reported
Tragically, the boundary tension has already claimed a life. A personnel of the Osun State Amotekun Corps was reportedly killed while responding to an emergency in the disputed area.
Both Governors Adeleke and Makinde had earlier directed their deputies to jointly engage local leaders and security operatives to de-escalate tension ahead of the release of a boundary report.
The ongoing efforts highlight the complex nature of interstate boundary disputes in Nigeria and the critical importance of diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation and loss of life.
