Suspected herdsmen launched a deadly attack on Tse Yange, a predominantly Tiv community in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State late Sunday night, killing the village head and abducting several residents.

According to local sources, the armed assailants arrived on motorcycles under the cover of darkness, unleashing terror on the peaceful agrarian settlement. The attack reportedly continued into the early hours of Monday, leaving many injured and forcing residents to flee their homes.

Attack Details and Casualties

BenriNews gathered that the gunmen specifically targeted the village head, who was killed during the assault. While the exact number of abducted and injured residents remains unclear, the attack has created significant displacement in the community.

This incident adds to the growing tension in the Benue-Nasarawa corridor, which has witnessed recurring violence between herders and farming communities in recent years. Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack or efforts to rescue the abducted victims.

The attack comes amid increasing concerns about security in the Middle Belt region, particularly in areas with significant farmer-herder populations. Just recently, the Nigerian Army vowed to go after attackers following similar incidents in neighboring Benue State.

Regional Security Concerns

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki had previously called on security agencies to reevaluate their strategy around the Benue-Nasarawa corridor following similar attacks. The persistent violence has raised questions about the effectiveness of current security measures in protecting vulnerable communities.

Local authorities in Nasarawa State have repeatedly called for calm and warned against statements that could further inflame tensions between different ethnic groups in the region.

As of the time of this report, efforts to get comments from security agencies regarding rescue operations or pursuit of the perpetrators have been unsuccessful.
