A tragic incident occurred in Awka on June 15, 2025, when Police Inspector Amaechi Okolie was fatally shot by his 10-year-old son in what authorities have described as an accidental discharge.

According to reports, the boy, unaware of the loaded state of his father's service rifle, pulled the trigger, striking the inspector in the back. The same shot also injured the inspector's second child, who was hit in the hand.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident in an official statement. "Regrettably, Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty at the hospital, while the second victim was said to be responding to treatment," Ikenga stated.

The police have recovered the AK47 rifle involved in the incident, and the remains of the deceased officer have been deposited in the morgue.

Safety Concerns Highlighted

This tragic event raises serious questions about firearm safety protocols, particularly in households where service weapons are present. Law enforcement officers are typically trained to secure their weapons when off duty, especially in homes with children.

The incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of proper firearm storage and safety education for family members in police households.

The Anambra State Police Command expressed condolences to the family and friends of the late Inspector while wishing the injured child a quick recovery.

BenriNews has learned that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing, though initial reports indicate it was a tragic accident rather than a deliberate act.
