The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has strongly condemned the recent massacre in Benue State, where over 100 people were killed and numerous houses were burned down during an attack on Yelewata community.
In a statement issued on Monday in Enugu by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the apex Igbo socio-political organization described the Saturday early morning attack as "callous, inhuman and unacceptable."
"The deadly night attack, which has caused massive displacement, in addition to the loss of innocent lives and property, is seen by Ohanaeze as callous, inhuman and unacceptable," the statement read.
Call for Urgent Intervention
Ohanaeze expressed deep concern over the prolonged inability of government and security agencies to stem the escalation of attacks in Benue and other parts of the country, warning of dire consequences if the incessant attacks are not contained.
The organization emphasized that human life remains sacrosanct regardless of religion, ethnicity, or social status, and condemned the "ruthless mass bloodletting" as ungodly and contrary to national harmony in Nigeria's multi-ethnic landscape.
"We, therefore, call on government and stakeholders at different levels to put in place adequate measures that would address this theatre of carnage, by finding a lasting solution to the vicious circle of violence between herders and farmers," Chukwu stated.
Proposed Solutions
The statement urged the Benue State Government and stakeholders to collaborate with the Federal Government and security agencies to convene a national dialogue on the unending destruction of lives and property in the state.
This attack comes amid growing concerns about insecurity in the region, with various groups and individuals calling for more decisive action from authorities to protect citizens.
The Yelewata community attack represents one of the deadliest incidents in recent times in Benue State, which has long suffered from violent clashes often attributed to farmer-herder conflicts.
