The Nigeria National League (NNL) has officially confirmed the relegation of eight clubs following the conclusion of the 2024/25 regular season. The affected clubs include Abakaliki FC, Adamawa United, Zamfara United, Madiba FC, Gateway United, Igbajo United FC, 1472 FC, and Ijele FC.
NNL Chairman George Aluo explained that the relegations were implemented based on resolutions reached during the last NNL Congress held in Bauchi.
"At the AGM before the start of the season, it was unanimously agreed that eight teams would be relegated at the end of the season," Aluo told NNL Media. "Three from Conference A, three from Conference B, and one each from Conferences C and D."
League Structure Remains Intact
Despite the demotion of these eight teams, the league will maintain its structure with a total of 36 clubs for the upcoming campaign. This stability comes as four clubs—Lobi Stars, Heartland FC, Sunshine Stars, and Akwa United—will join the NNL next season after being relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The relegation of Gateway United to the Nigeria League One (NLO) following their defeat in Uyo marks a significant setback for the club, which had been competing in the NNL for several seasons.
Meanwhile, Osun United has qualified for the Super Eight playoff tournament, with coach Ajayi attributing their success to consistency throughout the season.
The NNL is expected to announce the venue and date for the Super 8 tournament next week, which will determine which teams gain promotion to the NPFL for the 2025/26 season.
