The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), the umbrella body for Muslims in the South West geopolitical zone, has raised an alarm over a recent incident where a masquerade invaded a mosque in Ondo State, warning that such actions could potentially trigger religious conflict if not properly addressed.

In a statement released on Monday, MUSWEN called on the Ondo State government and security agencies to take immediate action by arresting and punishing those responsible for the invasion of an Imam's house and mosque in Oke Agbe, Akoko area of the state.

Potential for Religious Crisis

The statement, jointly signed by MUSWEN President Rasaki Oladejo and Executive Secretary Professor Muslih Tayo Yahya, described the attack as one with serious potential to ignite religious tensions in the state.

"We urge the relevant authorities, including the police and local government officials, to act swiftly and impartially to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent future occurrences," the statement read.

MUSWEN warned that if not properly checked, such incidents risk escalating communal tensions and eroding the harmony that Ondo State is known for.

Call for Investigation

The Muslim body urged the state government to immediately launch a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the invasion, identify the culprits, and ensure they face the full weight of the law.

This incident comes at a time when religious harmony is particularly important in Nigeria's diverse society, where interfaith relations remain delicate in many communities.

As of the time of reporting, the Ondo State government has not yet issued an official response to MUSWEN's concerns.
