Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, has pledged to maintain a cordial relationship with journalists working in the state, emphasizing the importance of media cooperation in effective policing.
The commitment was made during an interactive session with media practitioners held at the police officers' mess in Ilorin on Sunday, where the Commissioner promised to establish seamless communication channels between the police command and journalists.
"We recognize journalists as the vital link between the police and the community," Ojo stated, underscoring the need for free flow of information to enhance public awareness of police activities.
Key Reforms and Policies
During the session, CP Ojo addressed several concerns raised by journalists, revealing plans to rejuvenate the X-squad of the police command. This specialized unit will be tasked with monitoring the conduct of officers and men serving in the command to ensure professional standards are maintained.
The Commissioner also clarified the recent cessation of suspect parades by the police, explaining that this change aligns with directives from the Inspector General of Police. "Suspects are assumed to be innocent until convicted by the law courts," he explained, highlighting the command's commitment to upholding legal principles.
Ojo emphasized the critical role media plays in communicating police achievements to the public, calling for continued support from journalists in helping the force fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.
The interactive session was attended by top police officers and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) from across the state, signaling the command's seriousness about improving police-media relations.
