Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke has issued a stern warning to radio stations operating in the state, threatening sanctions against those defying broadcasting codes amid rising political tensions.
In a statement released on Sunday in Osogbo by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor expressed concerns over incitement to violence and repeated breaches of broadcasting standards by certain media outlets.
"Some stations have allowed guests to make inflammatory statements capable of causing unrest. These stations also deny fair hearing to affected individuals, thus violating professional standards," the statement read.
Governor Adeleke emphasized that these actions pose a significant threat to peace and stability in the state. He has directed the Commissioner for Information to immediately summon General Managers of the affected stations as a preliminary measure before more serious actions are taken.
"While press freedom is guaranteed, it must be guided by responsibility and ethics," the governor stressed.
Political Tensions Following Appeal Court Ruling
The governor's warning comes amid heightened political tensions following a recent Appeal Court ruling on Thursday, June 12, 2025. Adeleke specifically cautioned opposition politicians against inciting violence over the court's decision.
"Anyone found promoting violence will be dealt with by law enforcement agencies," he warned, accusing some politicians of attempting to take the law into their hands through inflammatory public statements.
BenriNews gathered that a fresh crisis is brewing in the state as local government executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are making conflicting claims to control council areas following the Appellate Court's decision.
Police Deployment to Maintain Order
In response to the situation, the Osun State Police Command has deployed personnel across local government secretariats throughout the state to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the deployment, stating: "Our own is to provide security, to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order, which we have put in place. We are not into politics; we are just to ensure safety."
"Our deployment has been done, and I urge the people of Osun State to go about their business," Ojelabi added.
The situation continues to develop as authorities work to maintain peace in the state amid the political disagreements.
