Former Senate President, David Mark has expressed deep concern over the persistent killings of innocent citizens in Benue State, warning that if the situation continues unchecked, Nigerians may be forced to take up arms to defend themselves.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark described the recent violence as "senseless, tragic, and unacceptable," emphasizing that the primary responsibility of any government is to ensure the welfare and security of its citizens.
"This is the unfortunate reality the Benue people are confronted with. Government must rise to its responsibility, or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves," he stated.
Recent Violence in Benue
BenriNews reports that over 200 residents of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State were killed over the weekend, marking one of the deadliest attacks in the region's recent history.
The former Senate President decried the deteriorating security situation in Benue, which has resulted in hundreds of casualties and widespread destruction of property over time.
Call for Government Action
Mark urged the Federal Government to fulfill its constitutional obligation to safeguard the lives and property of all Nigerians, stating that any deviation from this mandate constitutes a gross disservice to the people.
The statement comes amid rising tensions in Makurdi, where angry youths reportedly chased away herders and their cattle in response to the killings.
Other reactions to the Benue killings include calls from religious leaders and civil society groups demanding urgent security intervention and protection of lives and livelihoods in the affected communities.
Governor Alia of Benue State has reportedly lamented that the military is overstretched but assured citizens that the government is responding with both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to tackle the insecurity.
