Former Senate President, David Mark, has issued a stern warning that citizens may be forced to defend themselves if the government continues to fail in stopping the persistent killings across communities in Benue State.

In a statement released on Monday through his Special Adviser, Paul Mumeh, Mark described the ongoing violence as "barbaric, inhumane, and intolerable," while criticizing what he termed the government's inability to halt what appears to be a "slow-moving war" against defenseless civilians.

"This is no longer acceptable. The government cannot continue to look on helplessly while our people are being slaughtered in their own homes. If this persists, people may have no option but to resort to self-defence," Mark stated.

Government Responsibility and Accountability

The former Senate President emphasized that protecting citizens' lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of any government. He warned that continued silence or inaction from authorities could be interpreted as complicity and signals a breakdown of the social contract between the state and its people.

Mark called on the Federal Government to urgently fulfill its constitutional duty by taking immediate and decisive action to end the bloodshed. He also urged Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, to strengthen internal security measures and ensure more effective collaboration with federal security agencies.

Call for Community Vigilance

The statement further appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and local vigilantes to support security forces by providing intelligence and working collectively to prevent further attacks.

Expressing solidarity with the people of Benue, Senator Mark said: "This is a painful period, but we must not allow fear or anger to divide us. Let us remain united, support one another, and speak with one voice against this violence. We must be vigilant, yet law-abiding."

According to reports from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the recent attacks have displaced at least 6,527 residents, highlighting the severe humanitarian impact of the ongoing crisis.

The situation continues to draw reactions from various quarters, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the government's handling of security challenges in the region.
