The Nigerian government, through the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has clarified that reports of organizing special prayers to address the country's food crisis do not represent an official policy approach to food insecurity.
In a statement released on Saturday via the ministry's X (formerly Twitter) account, officials explained that the prayer sessions were actually an initiative of the Human Resources Department aimed at promoting staff well-being, similar to other wellness programs.
"The prayer session is an initiative of the Human Resources Department aimed at promoting the well-being of the staff, just as the already established monthly aerobic exercises and the gymnasium are intended for physical fitness. Routine medical checkups for staff are conducted for their health," the statement read.
Concrete Actions to Address Food Security
The ministry emphasized that President Bola Tinubu's administration is implementing tangible measures to ensure Nigerians have access to quality and affordable food under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
These initiatives include:
Delivery of more than one thousand tractors to support farmers
Signing of the commercialization phase under President Tinubu's supervision
Distribution of over two million bags of fertilizer to farmers to reduce production costs
Efforts to strengthen cooperative societies and enhance their role in economic development
Nigeria's Food Security Challenges
The clarification comes at a critical time when Nigerians are grappling with inflation, which stood at 23.71 percent as of April 2025. The situation has been exacerbated by adverse impacts of floods in parts of Nigeria, such as Mokwa in Niger State.
The United Nations has projected that millions of Nigerians are expected to fall into acute hunger in the coming months if decisive action is not taken to address the food crisis.
The government's clarification appears to be an attempt to reassure citizens that it is taking concrete steps beyond spiritual interventions to address the pressing food security challenges facing the nation.
