Prominent members of opposition political parties in Ebonyi State have officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), significantly strengthening the party's position in the state.
The defection, which took place on June 14, was led by Barrister Nnabuife Abara, a former Development Centre coordinator from Wigbeke Ward 2 of Effium and former Special Assistant to the immediate past Governor. Abara was joined by numerous supporters from Alioma and Ezekuna Alioma autonomous communities.
State APC Chairman Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, alongside other party executives at state, local government, and ward levels, formally received the defectors in a ceremony that highlighted the growing influence of the ruling party in Ebonyi.
Governor's Leadership Style Attracts New Members
During the event, Emegha congratulated the new members for what he termed a "wise and bold decision," attributing the defections to Governor Francis Nwifuru's achievements and people-centered leadership style under his "Peoples Charter of Needs" mantra.
"There is no room for divisive politics anymore in Ebonyi State," Emegha stated, emphasizing the need for unity, peace, and purposeful engagement among all party members. He urged the new defectors to uphold the ideals and integrity of the party.
In his remarks, Barr. Abara praised Governor Nwifuru for creating an environment that promotes peace, unity, and inclusive development across the state. "We have watched the governor's leadership style very keenly and have found in him a sincere and focused leader, hence the need to join the progressives family," he said.
Abara further pledged that the people of Alioma and Ezekuna Alioma have resolved to align fully with the APC and will lead campaigns from their communities to ensure strong support for Nwifuru in the 2027 governorship election.
Peace-Building Efforts Highlighted
The defectors also commended the governor's interventions in the longstanding conflict between Effium and Alioma communities, describing his peace efforts as a demonstration of true statesmanship.
Prince Ikechukwu Odono, Executive Chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, similarly praised the governor's peace-building initiatives, particularly referencing the historic reconciliation between Ngbo and Agila communities, which had been in conflict for over a century.
"Governor Nwifuru is a gift to Ebonyi," Prince Odono stated. "He has united Ohaukwu more than ever before, and today virtually all the political parties in the LGA have collapsed into APC because of his peaceful disposition."
Hon. Ogbonna Nwogbaga, Coordinator of Effium Development Centre, congratulated the new members and encouraged them to remain committed in their support for the APC-led government, assuring them that Governor Nwifuru rewards loyalty, integrity, and performance.
Political analysts suggest that with this mass defection, the APC is solidifying its grassroots dominance in Ebonyi State, positioning itself as the leading political force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
