The posthumous conferment of the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Chief Bola Ige by President Bola Tinubu has been described as a long-awaited tribute to one of Nigeria's most respected statesmen.
This acknowledgement was made by Wole Oke, member representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency of Osun State in the House of Representatives in a statement released on Friday in Osogbo.
In the statement, Oke said the announcement was warmly received, noting that it is a fitting and long overdue recognition of Ige's immense contributions to the nation.
The lawmaker praised Tinubu for his commitment to acknowledging Nigeria's past leaders and expressed his deepest gratitude for the gesture.
"The award would rekindle national pride and inspire younger generations to emulate the late statesman's example," Oke stated, adding that such honours help keep the memory and values of national heroes alive.
He urged Nigerians to reflect on the life and sacrifices of Bola Ige and encouraged unity and renewed dedication to the ideals of justice and good governance.
"His life and work remain a beacon of hope, not only for Osun State but for all Nigerians," he added.
Legacy of the "Cicero of Esa-Oke"
Oke maintained that, "Chief Bola Ige was not only a son of Osun State but a beacon of hope and resilience for all Nigerians. This recognition by President Tinubu is a testament to the enduring impact of his contributions to our country's development and democratic ideals."
Chief Bola Ige, widely known as the "Cicero of Esa-Oke," was a former governor of the old Oyo State and also served as Attorney-General of the Federation. He was recognised for his lifelong dedication to justice, democracy and national unity, all of which defined his legacy and political career.
Bola Ige was assassinated in his Bodija, Ibadan home on December 21, 2001, and to date, the perpetrators of the crime have not been brought to justice.
The posthumous honour comes as a significant recognition of Ige's contributions to Nigeria's democratic journey and his unwavering commitment to justice and good governance.
