The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has officially announced that the 2025/26 season will commence on Friday, August 22, 2025. This announcement was made by NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye during a media interaction held in Abuja on Friday.

According to Elegbeleye, the league management is working to align the NPFL calendar with other major football leagues around the world. This strategic move aims to enhance the competitiveness and international relevance of Nigeria's premier football competition.

"We are committed to structuring our calendar to be in sync with other leagues globally," Elegbeleye stated during the briefing. "This alignment will benefit our clubs participating in continental competitions and create a more professional environment for Nigerian football."

Fixture Release and Registration Guidelines

The NPFL is expected to release the complete fixtures for the upcoming season in the coming weeks. Additionally, player registration guidelines will be published to ensure clubs have adequate time to prepare their squads for the new campaign.

This announcement comes after a successful 2024/25 season that saw Remo Stars crowned as champions for the first time in their history. Rivers United finished as runners-up, with both teams securing spots in the CAF Champions League for the 2025/26 season.

Abia Warriors, who finished third in the recently concluded season, will represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup, adding to the growing list of Nigerian clubs competing at the continental level.

Continental Representatives

The qualification of three Nigerian clubs for continental competitions highlights the progress being made in the domestic league. Remo Stars, nicknamed the Sky Blue Stars, will be making their debut in the CAF Champions League, while Rivers United returns to the competition with hopes of making a deeper run than in previous campaigns.

Abia Warriors' qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup marks a significant milestone for the Umuahia-based club, which has shown remarkable improvement in recent seasons.

Football enthusiasts across Nigeria are eagerly anticipating the new season, with expectations of improved organization, increased competitiveness, and enhanced broadcast coverage to further promote the domestic league.
