Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi is on the verge of making history as he approaches the FIFA Club World Cup with an opportunity to break the goal-scoring record currently held by Cristiano Ronaldo and the late Pele.

The Argentine superstar has already netted five goals in previous Club World Cup tournaments and needs just two more to surpass Ronaldo and Pele, who each have seven goals in the competition. Neither Ronaldo nor Pele's record will be defended this year as they are not participating in the tournament.

New Format, New Opportunity

This year's FIFA Club World Cup features a revamped format with 32 teams competing, a significant expansion from previous editions. Inter Miami has been placed in Group A alongside Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Brazilian powerhouse Palmeiras, and Portuguese club FC Porto.

The Herons will kick off their campaign against Al Ahly on Saturday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, giving Messi a home advantage as he begins his quest for the record.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner will be looking to lead his team to victory while potentially adding another remarkable achievement to his illustrious career. This tournament presents a unique opportunity for Messi to further cement his legacy in international club competitions.

However, Al Ahly player Trezeguet has already issued a warning to Messi and his teammates, stating that the Egyptian side "doesn't care about big names" as they prepare to face the star-studded Inter Miami squad.

The expanded Club World Cup format provides more matches and consequently more opportunities for Messi to surpass the record, assuming Inter Miami progresses through the tournament.
