Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has outlined three key signings his former club needs to make to mount serious challenges for both the Premier League title and UEFA Champions League next season.

The Blues enjoyed a relatively successful campaign last season, securing a top-four finish in the Premier League and claiming the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy after defeating Real Betis in the final.

However, Makelele believes Enzo Maresca's squad requires significant reinforcement in specific areas to compete at the highest level.

Makelele's Transfer Recommendations

Speaking to BBC Sport, the Frenchman identified three positions that need strengthening: "Chelsea need a goalkeeper, striker and maybe winger to fight for the Champions League and Premier League next season."

Chelsea have already begun their summer transfer activity, securing the signatures of promising talents Liam Delap and Dario Essugo. However, if Makelele's assessment is accurate, the west London club's transfer business is far from complete.

The club is expected to continue their recruitment drive before the summer transfer window closes, with particular focus on the positions highlighted by their former midfield enforcer.

Makelele, who was a pivotal figure in Chelsea's midfield between 2003 and 2008, winning two Premier League titles and multiple domestic cups, remains a respected voice when discussing the club's needs.

His insights come at a crucial time for Chelsea as they prepare for their return to Champions League football after last season's top-four finish.

With Enzo Maresca at the helm and the backing of the club's ownership, Chelsea fans will be eager to see if the club follows through on Makelele's recommendations in their pursuit of major silverware next season.
