Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has advised his former club to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen instead of Viktor Gyokeres as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.

The Red Devils are actively searching for more firepower upfront following an underwhelming campaign that saw them finish in a disappointing 15th position in the Premier League table. The current striking duo of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failed to deliver consistently, contributing to the team's struggles.

Ruben Amorim's side also suffered heartbreak in Europe, losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the UEFA Europa League, further highlighting their need for reinforcements.

Ferdinand Backs Osimhen's Experience

While Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford following his outstanding campaign in Portugal, Ferdinand believes Osimhen would be a better fit for Manchester United.

"I think Gyokeres, everyone's talking about him. Again, I think if I'm looking at the market now and I had to pick him or Osimhen, I'd probably pick Osimhen because of that experience," the former England international told the Mirror.

Gyokeres has been in sensational form, scoring 39 goals and registering eight assists to help Sporting Lisbon clinch the Portuguese League title. Despite these impressive statistics, Ferdinand's preference for Osimhen highlights the Nigerian's proven track record at the highest level.

Transfer Speculation Intensifies

Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has been the subject of intense transfer speculation with several top European clubs reportedly interested in securing his services. Recent reports suggest his chances of staying at the Turkish club are increasing, though Manchester United's potential interest could change the situation.

The Nigerian international has previously been linked with moves to Chelsea and Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, with the latter's president, Bin Nafal, recently revealing why they failed to sign the striker in a previous transfer window.

As Manchester United look to rebuild under Amorim's leadership, the striker position remains a key area for improvement. Whether they will heed Ferdinand's advice and pursue Osimhen remains to be seen as the summer transfer window approaches.
