A Department of State Services (DSS) operative identified as PW4-DDD testified in court on Friday, describing Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu as "a terrorist" during cross-examination at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The shielded witness, testifying in Kanu's ongoing terrorism-related trial before Justice James Omotosho, stated that the IPOB leader "has been calling for the break up and secession of the South-East from Nigeria."
When questioned by the prosecution about how he became familiar with Kanu, the operative responded: "I knew him when he was arrested in Lagos and he incites people through Radio Biafra."
Background of Kanu's Case
Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested in 2017 but was later released on bail. He subsequently fled to Europe following a military raid on his residence in Afaraukwu, Abia State. In June 2021, Kanu was rearrested in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition back to Nigeria, where he has remained in DSS custody since.
During Friday's proceedings, the DSS operative also provided details about the recovery of broadcasting equipment allegedly used by Kanu. "Mazi Nnamdi Kanu kept it [the transmitter] in one Benjamin Madubugwu's house at Ubuluisiiuzo," the witness testified. "I was to carry out the search, locate the transmitter and retrieve it."
The trial continues to draw significant attention across Nigeria, particularly in the South-East region where IPOB maintains considerable support despite being proscribed by the federal government.
