Senator Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West, has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio for allegedly violating his constitutional rights during President Bola Tinubu's Democracy Day address to the joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday.
Speaking to journalists after the president's address, Dickson claimed that Akpabio rushed through President Tinubu's letters to the National Assembly and ignored his intervention during the proceedings.
"That's not how democracy works. That's how military regimes operate," Dickson stated, expressing frustration that his right as a Senator to "raise a constitutional issue" was "completely disregarded" by the Senate President.
Criticism of President's Speech
The incident comes amid broader criticism of President Tinubu's Democracy Day speech. BenriNews reports that various stakeholders have expressed disappointment that the president's address allegedly failed to address critical national issues, including the ongoing security challenges facing the country.
According to some Nigerians, the president appeared more focused on political matters rather than addressing the widespread killings occurring across the nation. Many citizens had high expectations for the speech, hoping it would outline concrete solutions to the country's pressing problems.
The Democracy Day celebration, commemorating Nigeria's return to democratic governance, has been overshadowed by these controversies, highlighting tensions within the political establishment.
Senator Dickson's complaints add to a growing list of criticisms regarding the administration's approach to democratic processes and national dialogue.
