The Abia State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has announced that all private schools operating in the state must revalidate their operations through a newly launched centralized digital portal beginning June 16, 2025.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, emphasized that the initiative is not aimed at closing down any private schools but rather to document and improve educational standards across the state.
Digital Registration System
The revalidation exercise will register all private schools—including approved, unapproved, and those operating without proper authorization—into the newly launched Abia State Basic and Secondary Education Management Information System (ASBS-EMIS).
"This exercise is not about closing schools; it is about lifting every school in Abia State to meet minimum acceptable standards. It's about inclusion, quality, and transparency in education," Ubochi stated during the announcement in Umuahia.
Under the new system, each private school will receive unique login credentials to access the portal, while teachers and students will be issued individual identification numbers.
Inclusive Approach to Standards
The commissioner clarified that the initiative extends to schools currently operating without approval, not to shut them down but to help them meet acceptable standards over time.
"The initiative is inclusive, extending to schools currently operating without approval, not to shut them down but to help them meet acceptable standards over time," he added.
Ubochi emphasized that the revalidation exercise is completely free of charge and urged school administrators to report any cases of financial demands from officials.
The digital information system will monitor various aspects of school operations, including teacher-student ratio, infrastructure status, and regulatory compliance.
This move aligns with Governor Alex Otti's administration's efforts to reform and improve the education sector in Abia State.
