Michal Probierz has resigned as Poland's national team head coach following a public feud with star striker Robert Lewandowski, citing "the good of the national team" as his reason for stepping down.
"I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of selector," Probierz said in a statement released on Thursday.
Captaincy Dispute Triggers Crisis
The resignation comes after Lewandowski publicly announced on Sunday that he would not play for Poland while Probierz remained in charge. The Barcelona striker was reportedly furious after being stripped of the captain's armband by the coach.
The situation escalated following Poland's 2-1 defeat to Finland, a result that knocked the team off the top of their European World Cup qualifying group. The loss, combined with the public dispute between the coach and the team's most prominent player, created an untenable situation for the Polish Football Association.
Uncertain Future for Polish National Team
Lewandowski, widely regarded as one of the world's premier strikers, has been the face of Polish football for over a decade. His refusal to play under Probierz created a significant crisis for the national team program, ultimately leading to the coach's departure.
The Polish Football Association has not yet announced a replacement for Probierz, leaving questions about whether Lewandowski will return to the national team setup under new leadership.
This development comes at a critical time for Poland as they continue their campaign to qualify for the next World Cup, with the team now facing uncertainty in both leadership and potentially player availability.
