A commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider) became an unexpected hero after saving a Nigerian Correctional Service officer who attempted to take his own life by jumping into the Gusau Dam in Zamfara State.
The officer, identified as Abdullahi Nura, a Chief Correctional Assistant (CCA) stationed at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Gusau, reportedly left for work as usual before diverting his route to one of the deepest water bodies in Zamfara's capital.
Quick Thinking Saves a Life
According to a statement by the Zamfara State Correctional Service Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Abubakar (ASC I), Nura hired an Okada rider who transported him to the dam. Upon arrival, without warning, the officer suddenly jumped into the water.
The startled motorcyclist immediately raised an alarm, alerting nearby security officials and bystanders who rushed to the scene. Responders were able to pull Nura from the water just in time.
"He was still dressed in his uniform, and his official ID card was found tucked against his chest," the statement revealed.
Ongoing Recovery and Support
The Nigerian Correctional Service headquarters in the state was promptly contacted, and a team dispatched by the Controller of Corrections, CCS Musa Tanko, arrived quickly at the scene.
Nura was taken to the MSCC medical clinic in Gusau, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Authorities have confirmed that he has regained consciousness and is in stable condition.
While the motive behind the attempted suicide remains unclear, the correctional service says it is closely monitoring Nura's recovery while offering him the necessary support.
This incident highlights the importance of mental health awareness and the critical role that bystanders can play in suicide prevention through quick action.
