Former Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has described the National Assembly as the "bedrock of democracy" and the arm of government that most truly represents the will of the Nigerian people.
Saraki made these remarks in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account as Nigeria celebrated 26 years since returning to democratic governance. His comments coincided with his participation in the joint session of the National Assembly held on Thursday to commemorate Democracy Day.
"I congratulate all Nigerians at home and abroad on the 26th anniversary of democracy. This achievement is a result of the sacrifice and perseverance by all of us and as such we deserve a pat on the back for this," Saraki wrote.
The former Senate President paid tribute to Nigeria's pro-democracy heroes who resisted military rule and paved the way for democratic freedom. He acknowledged both prominent political leaders and unknown protesters who made various sacrifices, including those who "lost their lives, limbs, and livelihoods" in the struggle.
Symbolic Venue Choice
Saraki commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for attending the commemorative event in the National Assembly chamber, noting the symbolic significance of the venue choice.
"Today's gathering indicates clearly that the legislature is the bedrock of democracy," he emphasized. "The Nigerian leadership did not gather in Aso Rock Villa, or the foyer of the Supreme Court, or the covered seats of Eagle Square to celebrate democracy. We are here in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly to celebrate representative government."
His comments resonated with many Nigerians online, with several users highlighting the need for a stronger, more independent legislature to address growing national challenges.
The Democracy Day celebration was marked nationwide with various commemorative events reflecting on the country's political evolution since the end of military rule in 1999.
