Amid escalating tensions over the ongoing emirship dispute in Kano State, a prominent citizen, Alhaji Abdussalami Muhammad Yaro, has issued an open letter to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, appealing for urgent judicial intervention to prevent what he describes as a looming crisis.
In his letter dated June 12, 2025, Yaro urged the Chief Justice to expedite the hearing of the substantive appeal before the Supreme Court that challenges previous lower court decisions regarding the Kano Emirship tussle.
Describing the situation as a "dangerous stalemate," Yaro warned that the presence of two rival claimants to the throne—each with significant support—has created a fragile peace that could collapse without timely judicial resolution.
"This situation, fuelled by passionate historical, and now political affiliations within the State, has created a palpable tension," Yaro wrote. "It is, in the current volatile climate, a ticking time bomb."
Immediate Threat to Peace
The letter highlighted that unlike the Gwandu Emirate dispute, which the Supreme Court resolved after over two decades, the Kano case presents a more immediate threat because all contenders currently reside in Kano, raising the possibility of direct confrontations and potential unrest.
Yaro outlined four key dangers posed by the delay:
Heightened Risk of Violence: The legal limbo creates fertile ground for misinformation and unrest among opposing supporters.
Governance Paralysis: Traditional administration and state leadership focus are being diverted from critical development matters.
Erosion of Judicial Trust: Continued delays may lead to public perception of inefficiency or bias in the judiciary.
National Implications: With Kano being a central hub in Northern Nigeria, any unrest could have nationwide ramifications.
"The Kano people stand at a precipice. A swift, definitive, and legally sound resolution from the highest court in the land is the most potent antidote to the poison of division and the threat of violence," Yaro stated in his appeal.
He concluded with a prayer for peace and stability in Kano and the nation at large, "May the Almighty Allah help Kano State and its people to overcome all difficulties and restore permanent peace and progress—and the nation in general. Amin."
The Emirship dispute in Kano continues to attract national attention, with citizens and political observers closely monitoring both the legal proceedings and social developments surrounding the case.
