As Nigeria marks its 26th year of uninterrupted democracy, the Accord Party has urged governments at all levels to prioritize the safety and well-being of Nigerians in accordance with constitutional provisions.

In a statement signed by National Chairman Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem, the party emphasized that June 12 represents "Nigerians' audacity of courage, faith in democratic governance and the sanctity of the ballot box."

The party noted that this year's Democracy Day provides an opportunity for the nation to embrace democratic ethics and ideals that will strengthen constitutional governance.

Constitutional Responsibility

"Governments at all levels should ensure the safety and well-being of the people as provided for in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, which states that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government," the statement read.

Accord Party called for active citizen participation in the political process, emphasizing that sovereignty ultimately resides with the people. The party urged Nigerians to hold elected officials accountable, describing this as "the only way to ensure sustainable democracy and development."

"The masses desire and deserve a fair deal from their governments, not mere palliatives," the statement continued.

Anambra Election

Looking ahead to the November governorship election in Anambra State, the party encouraged voters to support its candidate, Onyeeze Chidi Charles, and his running mate, Ezeadili Appolonia.

The party pledged to resist any attempts to undermine the electoral process and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain neutrality and provide a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.

"We must get it right this time," the party emphasized, highlighting the importance of fair elections in strengthening Nigeria's democratic institutions.

The party's statement concluded by calling for national unity: "The need to be in one accord for national transformation cannot be overemphasized. We should take pride in our shared vision of a better Nigeria and our cherished unity in diversity as we rededicate ourselves to the service of the fatherland."
