Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has called for renewed commitment to democratic values, inclusive participation, and transparent electoral processes as Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day.

Speaking at the 2025 Democracy Day celebration held at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta on Thursday, Abiodun emphasized the importance of strengthening democratic institutions and leveraging technology to enhance voter confidence.

The event, themed "June 12: Electoral Reforms and Democratic Consolidation, Enhancing Voters' Confidence Through Technology," highlighted ongoing challenges in Nigeria's democratic journey despite notable progress.

Youth Participation in Democratic Process

Governor Abiodun, represented by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, specifically urged Nigerian youth to actively participate in shaping the country's democratic future.

"Our youths must take their place in shaping the country's democratic journey by taking part in civic dialogue and holding leaders to account through informed action and not cynicism," the governor stated.

Abiodun underscored that June 12 represents both the fierce struggle and meaningful progress Nigerians have made toward a more inclusive political order, while honoring the memory of Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Addressing Electoral Challenges

The governor acknowledged persistent challenges facing Nigeria's electoral system, including malpractices, voter apathy, logistical issues, and electoral violence, which have eroded public trust and weakened democratic governance.

"Every Nigerian must feel empowered to vote and every vote must count," Abiodun emphasized, adding that "electoral integrity is now an expectation, not an exception."

Former Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Mutalubi Adebayo, delivered a lecture at the event, expressing disappointment that despite the June 12, 1993 election being widely regarded as the fairest and freest in Nigeria's history, it was annulled.

Adebayo emphasized the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adopt more advanced technology in electoral processes and fully implement the electoral act.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Governor Salako-Oyedele led government officials to the family house of the late Chief MKO Abiola in Gbagura Area of Abeokuta, where prayers were held in his memory.
