President Bola Tinubu has called on African countries to implement policies that promote eco-friendly tourism while preserving the continent's rich cultural heritage.

The President made this appeal on Wednesday while declaring open the 68th meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for Africa (CAF) in Abuja, where he emphasized the need for practical solutions and strategic partnerships to boost investment in tourism infrastructure.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu highlighted the importance of deepening the tourism sector's role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the African continent.

Vision for African Tourism

"Our target is to ensure Africa becomes the heart of global discourse in terms of how to harness tourism's full potential to boost the continent's economy," Tinubu stated.

The President declared Nigeria's support for sustainable tourism practices that reflect Africa's unique challenges and opportunities. He emphasized collaboration with regional bodies such as the African Union, ECOWAS, and UN Tourism as essential to this vision.

"This collaboration includes sharing best practices, tourism training, developing joint marketing campaigns for sustainable tourism, and improving infrastructure to support intra-African travel," he explained.

"Through these regional initiatives, Africa can foster a continent-wide movement toward tourism that benefits both the people and the environment, driving long-term prosperity for Africa."

Beyond Traditional Tourism

Tinubu noted that tourism extends beyond merely "travelling or visiting historic sites, waterfalls, mountains, and parks." He described the sector as "an engine of local economies, a catalyst for social understanding, and a bridge that unites cultures."

The President also acknowledged how technology and creativity have transformed tourism and its opportunities, making it appropriate for the conference to highlight the impact of artificial intelligence, innovation, and creative industries on the tourism sector.

The 68th meeting of the UN Tourism Commission for Africa brings together stakeholders from across the continent to discuss strategies for sustainable tourism development and economic growth through the sector.
