The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Corporal A.S. Wulumba, who was reportedly detained at the Bauchi Command for arriving late to his duty post.
According to family sources, Corporal Wulumba died while confined to a guardroom after being detained for lateness, which his sister claimed was due to health complications.
Family Alleges Procedural Violations
Numdarai Wulumba, the deceased's sister, revealed that her brother informed her on May 4, 2025, about his detention. She explained that despite her brother citing health issues as the reason for his tardiness, his commander dismissed the explanation and ordered his confinement.
"Detention for minor offences like lateness is not supposed to exceed 24 hours, according to military rules," Numdarai stated. "He should have been court-martialled if necessary, not locked up indefinitely. And now he's gone," she lamented.
NAF's Official Response
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the NAF spokesman, confirmed the incident and expressed regret over the unfortunate death. "The NAF deeply regrets to confirm the unfortunate passing of Corporal A.S. Wulumba. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time," Ejodame said.
The spokesman further assured that a board of inquiry has been convened to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding Wulumba's death, in line with standard procedure. "The loss of any of our personnel is profoundly felt across the Service," he added.
Ejodame promised that additional information would be provided as the investigation progresses, emphasizing that "the NAF remains committed to the welfare of its personnel and to upholding the highest standards."
The incident has raised questions about detention protocols within military establishments and the treatment of personnel with health concerns.
