The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Corporal A.S. Wulumba, who reportedly died while in detention at a guardroom under the Bauchi Command.
According to family sources, the airman was detained after reporting late to his duty post on May 4, 2025. His sister, Numdarai Wulumba, revealed that her brother had explained his tardiness was due to health complications, but his commander allegedly disregarded the medical excuse and ordered his confinement.
"Detention for minor offences like lateness is not supposed to exceed 24 hours, according to military rules. He should have been court-martialled if necessary, not locked up indefinitely. Now he's gone," Numdarai told reporters.
NAF's Official Response
In response to the incident, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, confirmed that a board of inquiry has been established to investigate the matter thoroughly.
"The loss of any of our personnel is profoundly felt across the Service. In line with standard procedure, a board of inquiry has been convened to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death. Further information will be provided as the investigation progresses," Gabkwet stated.
He emphasized that the NAF remains committed to the welfare of its personnel and to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency throughout the investigation process.
The case has raised questions about detention protocols within military establishments and the handling of personnel with health concerns. Military regulations typically limit detention periods for minor infractions, with more serious disciplinary matters requiring formal court-martial proceedings.
