The Kaduna State Government has inaugurated a Special Joint Task Force aimed at combating the rising incidents of urban crime and drug abuse in the state. The initiative comes in response to increasing violent attacks, phone snatching, and gangsterism that have been plaguing urban areas.

Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, who inaugurated the task force on behalf of Governor Uba Sani at the Council Chambers of the Deputy Governor's Office in Kashim Ibrahim House, emphasized the administration's unwavering commitment to public safety.

"Kaduna City will not become a haven for gangsters," Dr. Balarabe stated firmly. "The situation we have found ourselves in, though regrettable, can be surmounted with diligence, dedication, and commitment on the part of all relevant stakeholders and community members."

Multi-Agency Collaboration

The newly formed task force will be coordinated by the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs and comprises operatives from several federal and state security agencies, including:

  • Nigerian Police Force (lead agency)
  • Department of State Services (DSS)
  • Nigerian Army
  • Nigerian Air Force
  • Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)
  • National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
  • Nigerian Immigration Service
  • Nigerian Customs Service
  • Operation Fushin KADA
  • Kaduna State Traffic Law Enforcement Authority (KASTLEA)

Urban Crime Shift

Dr. Balarabe explained that the surge in urban crime is linked to various socio-economic pressures and urbanization. She noted that while progress has been made against rural banditry, criminal activities are now increasingly shifting into cities.

This initiative represents a comprehensive approach to addressing the complex security challenges facing Kaduna's urban centers and demonstrates the government's resolve to restore safety and security for residents.

The task force is expected to implement strategic operations targeting hotspots of criminal activity while also addressing the underlying factors contributing to drug abuse and youth involvement in crime.
