The pan-Yoruba sociocultural group, Afenifere, has described Nigeria's democracy and development as works in progress that require collective effort from all citizens, regardless of ethnic or religious backgrounds.

In a congratulatory message ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti emphasized that the anniversary serves as a reminder that Nigerians can unite to address the nation's challenges.

"As another Democracy Day is being observed on June 12, 2025, I, on behalf of Afenifere Worldwide, wish to heartily congratulate Nigerians on this momentous milestone," Fasoranti stated.

BenriNews reports that the Federal Government has declared Thursday a public holiday to commemorate Democracy Day.

A Call for Continued Democratic Progress

Fasoranti expressed confidence that with the right attitude, visionary leadership, and patriotic citizenry, Nigeria could still achieve the aspirations of its founding fathers who fought for independence.

"It is a milestone because it represents the day democracy and civil rule were reclaimed and restored in Nigeria, after a prolonged, destabilising military rule," he noted.

The Afenifere leader emphasized that while Nigerians celebrate the continued sustenance of democratic rule, they should remember that democratic practice remains a work in progress.

He specifically called on civil society groups to collaborate with other progressive forces to deepen democratic practices and processes in Nigeria, affirming that entrenching democratic ideals benefits both present and future generations.

Recognizing Past Sacrifices

"Without doubt, the sustained and uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 is a product of the sacrifices and commitment of our heroes and heroines in the civil society groups, and other well-meaning compatriots, who, along with Afenifere, coalesced into the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, to constitute the vanguard of progressive forces that ensured the restoration of democracy and the birth of the Fourth Republic," Fasoranti said.

The statement reflects on the historical significance of June 12 in Nigeria's democratic journey and emphasizes the need for continued vigilance and participation to strengthen democratic institutions.
