President Bola Tinubu has cancelled the national broadcast initially scheduled for Thursday morning to commemorate Nigeria's June 12 Democracy Day, according to an official statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

The cancellation was announced in a statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the OSGF, explaining that the President will instead deliver his address during the National Assembly Joint Session.

"Due to H.E President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled," the statement read. "President Bola Ahmed will deliver his address from the National Assembly. All other plans are in order as announced earlier."

The announcement came after an earlier statement from the OSGF had indicated that the President would address the nation through a national broadcast on Thursday morning as part of the Democracy Day celebrations.

June 12 holds significant importance in Nigeria's democratic history, commemorating the annulled presidential election of June 12, 1993, which is widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in the country's history.

This year's Democracy Day celebration comes amid various socio-economic challenges facing the nation, with citizens eager to hear the President's plans and policies to address these issues.

The change in format from a televised broadcast to an address at the National Assembly suggests the President may be seeking a more formal setting for his Democracy Day message, possibly to engage directly with lawmakers on critical national issues.
