The Cross River House of Assembly has suspended Theresa Ushie, Chairman of the Bekwarra Local Government Council, for three months following allegations of misconduct and corruption.
The decision was made on Tuesday in accordance with Section 14(3) of the Cross River Local Government Laws, 2025, after the Bekwarra Local Government Council Legislative Assembly passed a resolution against the chairman.
Speaker Elvert Ayambem announced that during the suspension period, Vice Chairman Egbung Odama would assume leadership of the council in an acting capacity.
Investigation Committee Formed
The Assembly has established a committee to thoroughly investigate the allegations against Ushie. Speaker Ayambem urged the panel to conduct a fair and comprehensive investigation into the claims.
This suspension follows an earlier attempt by councilors three months ago to impeach the chairman over similar allegations of corruption, misconduct, and abuse of power.
The case highlights ongoing governance challenges in Cross River State's local government administration and reflects growing concerns about accountability in public office.
