Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has dismissed the club's signing of Liam Delap, insisting that the striker will not solve the team's fundamental problems in attack.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the French World Cup winner identified Chelsea's lack of productive wingers as the main issue that needs addressing in the transfer market, rather than focusing on the center-forward position.
"I don't think Liam Delap will be the solution. If you look at the top teams, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and their wingers, those players make the difference all the time," Petit stated.
"Most people are focusing on the number nine at Chelsea but for me the biggest problem is the wingers," he added, highlighting how the current squad lacks the quality needed to compete with Europe's elite in the UEFA Champions League.
Overreliance on Palmer and Jackson
Petit's comments come after a season where Chelsea heavily relied on Cole Palmer, who emerged as the club's top scorer with 15 goals and 8 assists in the Premier League. Meanwhile, striker Nicolas Jackson managed just 10 goals and 5 assists.
According to Petit, the pressure has fallen disproportionately on these two players because Chelsea's wingers have failed to contribute significantly in terms of goals and assists.
The former France international believes that without addressing this imbalance, Chelsea will continue to struggle against top European opposition, regardless of who plays as their central striker.
Chelsea's transfer strategy has been under scrutiny in recent windows, with significant investment yet to translate into consistent performances on the pitch.
