Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has explained his decision to evacuate massive generators abandoned in his predecessor's hometown to the Government House in Calabar.

The generators, which were purchased during former Governor Ben Ayade's administration, had been left unused at the Obudu German Hospital in Ayade's hometown. Last week, State Security Adviser Major General Okoi Obono signed an official letter authorizing their relocation.

Generators Left Non-Functional

"The generators were not working since they were brought in, and there are equipment in the facility that require electricity round the clock," Governor Otu explained, addressing concerns about the evacuation order.

To ensure the Obudu German Hospital wasn't left without power, Otu revealed that his administration had imported a brand-new solar-powered generator from Belgium, which has already been installed at the facility.

"The generators will augment power output in the Government House in Calabar instead of leaving them to rot away in Obudu," the governor added.

Ongoing Recovery of State Assets

This evacuation is part of a broader initiative by the Otu administration to recover state properties. Early last year, the Cross River State House of Assembly had raised concerns about state properties allegedly in the custody of the former governor, including heavy-duty generators and agricultural tractors.

Gilbert Agbor, Special Adviser on Assets Management and Recovery of State Property, told reporters that the administration has successfully recovered several landed and movable properties allegedly taken illegally by individuals since Governor Otu assumed office two years ago.

The recovery efforts reflect the current administration's commitment to proper management and utilization of state resources for the benefit of Cross River residents.
