A 76-year-old retired Army Major, Joe Ajayi, has died in captivity despite his family paying a substantial ransom for his release, BenriNews reports.

Ajayi, who also served as Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for Kabba-Bunu Chapter, was abducted from his residence in Odo-Ape, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area on May 21, 2025, when armed assailants stormed his home firing indiscriminately before taking him away.

Ransom Negotiations and Health Deterioration

The kidnappers initially demanded N50 million for Ajayi's release. However, the elderly victim's health reportedly deteriorated rapidly during captivity due to being denied access to his essential medications.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the abductors demanded additional payment specifically for his medication—a demand the family was unable to meet. As his condition worsened, the captors eventually reduced their ransom demand to N10 million, giving the family renewed hope that his life could still be saved.

Tragic Discovery

After paying the N10 million ransom, the family was directed to a location where they were told Major Ajayi would be released. Instead, they made the heartbreaking discovery of his lifeless body on the floor. His remains have since been transferred to the mortuary at Kabba Specialist Hospital.

Major Ajayi was well-respected not only for his military service but also for his religious leadership in the community.

Rising Kidnapping Concerns in the Region

This incident adds to growing concerns about kidnapping in the region. Reports indicate that a first-class traditional ruler, Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, was also recently abducted in the state, highlighting the escalating security challenges facing local communities.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the investigation into Major Ajayi's abduction and death.
