Spain striker Álvaro Morata has hinted at a possible exit from the national team following his crucial penalty miss during Spain's UEFA Nations League final defeat to Portugal on Sunday.

The dramatic final at Munich's Allianz Arena ended 2-2 after 120 minutes of play, forcing the match into a penalty shootout where Morata became the only Spanish player to miss his spot-kick.

"Right now, I can only think about what happened today, but there is a possibility I won't come back to the national team in September," Morata revealed after the match, suggesting he might not return for Spain's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Turkey.

Penalty Heartbreak for Spain

The Nations League final was a tightly contested affair with Mikel Oyarzabal and Martín Zubimendi scoring for Spain, while Nuno Mendes and Cristiano Ronaldo found the net for Portugal during regular and extra time.

In the decisive penalty shootout, Portugal converted all five of their attempts while Spain managed only three successful conversions, with Morata's miss proving costly for the 2023 Nations League champions.

The defeat marks a bitter end to what had been a promising tournament for Spain, who were looking to defend their Nations League title after winning the previous edition.

Ronaldo's Triumph

For Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo, the victory represents another international trophy to add to their collection. Ronaldo, who scored during regular time and converted his penalty in the shootout, later revealed he had played through an injury during the match.

The Portuguese captain also made headlines with comments about his children, who have Spanish nationality, saying: "My children are Spanish, they'll respect me now after Portugal beat Spain."

Morata's potential departure would represent a significant loss for Spain, as the experienced striker has been a key figure in their recent successes, including their Euro 2024 campaign.

Spanish football authorities have yet to comment on Morata's statements as they prepare for the World Cup qualification matches scheduled for September.
