A tanker carrying 60,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) lost control and somersaulted along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at Oremeji, Ibadan on Saturday, June 7, 2025.
The HOWO trailer tanker with registration number KMC 692 ZE (Kano) swerved off the road while in motion and crashed into a nearby road divider, causing the fuel to spill out onto the roadway.
Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident on Sunday. According to him, the agency received a distress call about the accident at exactly 12:30 hours on Saturday.
"On arrival, we met a falling HOWO trailer tanker loaded with 60,000 litres capacity of automotive gas oil lost control whilst on motion, swerved off the road and somersaulted into a nearby road divider, with content gushing out," Akinwande stated.
The fire service team, led by ACFS Adekola, promptly responded to the scene and took immediate action to prevent a potential fire outbreak by carpeting the spillage with AFFF chemical foam compound to suppress the flammability of the liquid.
No Casualties Recorded
Akinwande confirmed that no casualties were recorded in the incident, although the tanker sustained significant damage. He attributed the accident to reckless driving by the truck driver.
"The fire service was able to save properties worth millions of naira," he added, highlighting the swift response of the emergency team in preventing what could have been a major disaster.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about road safety and the transportation of hazardous materials on Nigerian highways, particularly along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway which serves as a major artery connecting the southwestern part of the country.
Authorities continue to urge commercial vehicle drivers, especially those transporting flammable substances, to exercise caution and adhere to safety regulations while on the road.
