Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has defended Russia goalkeeper Matvey Safonov following a costly error that led to Nigeria's equalizer during their 1-1 international friendly draw on Friday in Moscow.

The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper mistakenly passed the ball to substitute Tolu Arokodare in the 71st minute, who capitalized on the opportunity to slot home Nigeria's equalizing goal at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Earlier in the match, Semi Ajayi had inadvertently scored an own goal during the first half, giving Russia the initial advantage.

"Everyone Makes Mistakes" - Chelle's Response

When questioned about Safonov's error during his post-match interview, Chelle expressed sympathy and support for the 26-year-old goalkeeper.

"Everyone makes mistakes – it's part of the game," Chelle stated. "Goals are scored precisely because of mistakes. I don't think the goalkeeper is the only one to blame – it's the result of the entire team's actions."

The Super Eagles coach further praised Safonov's abilities, adding, "I follow the French championship and I can say: you've a great goalkeeper."

The friendly match at Luzhniki Stadium reportedly broke Russia's six-year attendance record, highlighting the significant interest in the fixture between the two nations.

This result follows Nigeria's recent friendly draw against Zimbabwe, as the Super Eagles continue their preparation schedule under Coach Chelle's guidance.
