Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has revealed that his former club will not be signing Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen during this summer's transfer window, despite his hopes for the move.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the former Super Eagles captain expressed his disappointment while discussing Chelsea's striking options for the upcoming season.
"Everyone knows the number nine [Victor Osimhen] that I want us to get, but we're not getting him," Mikel stated. "We need to get Osimhen, but I don't think the club is going that route."
Instead, Mikel turned his attention to Chelsea's recent acquisition, expressing optimism about the club's new signing. "We've gotten [Liam] Delap and I hope he performs and gives Nicolas Jackson some competition. Then we'll see how it leads us from the FIFA Club World Cup into the Premier League and the Champions League."
Osimhen's Chelsea Connection
Osimhen has long been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with the West London club reportedly failing in their attempt to bring the Nigerian international to the Premier League last year. The Napoli striker has established himself as one of Europe's most prolific forwards, making him a coveted target for several top clubs.
Recent reports suggest Osimhen may be heading elsewhere, with the striker reportedly arriving in Nigeria ahead of a potential move to a new club. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal is rumored to have improved their offer for the Nigerian forward.
Chelsea's Forward Options
With Osimhen seemingly off the table, Chelsea will look to their current options, including first-choice striker Nicolas Jackson and new signing Liam Delap, to lead their attack in the upcoming season.
Mikel's comments highlight the ongoing challenge Chelsea faces in finding a consistent goalscorer as they prepare to compete across multiple competitions, including the Premier League, Champions League, and the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.
