Nigerian striker Chijioke Alaekwe has confirmed he is seeking a fresh challenge following Akwa United's relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), as his one-year contract with the club has expired.
The 27-year-old forward, who scored five goals in 21 appearances for the Promise Keepers during the 2024-25 season, saw his campaign cut short by a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
Player Confirms Departure
"My shoulder injury is almost fully healed. I'm grateful to God for the fast recovery rate," Alaekwe told reporters. "Well, I don't think I will be at Akwa United next season because my contract with the club has expired. I only signed a one-season deal when I joined, so as things stand, I'm a free player."
Despite his promising form for the former NPFL champions, Alaekwe's contributions weren't enough to prevent Akwa United from dropping to the lower division. The Promise Keepers, who won the NPFL title in 2021, will now compete in the Nigeria National League (NNL) next season.
Alaekwe's availability as a free agent is likely to attract interest from several NPFL clubs looking to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the 2025-26 season. His goal-scoring record of five goals in 21 matches demonstrates his ability to find the net at the top level of Nigerian football.
What's Next for Akwa United?
Meanwhile, Akwa United faces a rebuilding phase as they prepare for life in the NNL. The Uyo-based club will need to restructure their squad and potentially part ways with several key players following their relegation.
In related NPFL news, Katsina United has set guidelines for their new season preparation, while Nasarawa United is reportedly in talks with experienced coach Salisu Yusuf over a potential contract extension.
The upcoming transfer window promises to be an active one for Nigerian clubs as they look to strengthen their squads ahead of the new campaign.
