The Niger Delta Rights Advocates (NDRA) has called for the automatic promotion of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer Ugochukwu Orji, who rejected a N10 million bribe from a suspected ritualist attempting to flee the country.

The suspect, Levi Onyeka Obu, had fled Enugu State after local vigilantes discovered human remains, including that of a pregnant woman, buried at his residence. His escape attempt was thwarted when he was intercepted by immigration officials at the border.

Rare Display of Patriotism

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Bright Ngolo, the NDRA described Officer Orji's action as demonstrating "rare patriotism and honour" in the face of temptation. The group expressed optimism that such integrity gives hope for a better Nigeria.

"An automatic promotion for Officer Orji would serve as encouragement for all officers in the five paramilitary agencies under that ministry, and indeed other security services, to consider the interest of the nation above personal gain," the statement read.

The actions of officers like Ugochukwu Orji remind us that integrity still exists within our institutions.

Improved Border Security

The socio-political group also commended the Ministry of Interior for deploying modern security features at Nigeria's land borders and international airports. These measures, according to NDRA, are crucial for curbing cross-border criminality and securing the nation's territorial integrity.

The group further praised Nigerian media outlets for highlighting the patriotic actions of selfless Nigerians, which helps promote positive values in society.

This incident comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen its border security protocols and enhance the capacity of immigration officers to detect and prevent criminal activities.
