Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has added another prestigious accolade to her growing collection after being honoured at Billboard's inaugural Global Power Players Event.
The event, which took place on Wednesday at Shoreditch House in east London, England, saw Tems receive the Diamond Award presented by incoming Billboard Africa editor Nkosiyati Khumalo.
The Oscar-nominated star shared her gratitude during her acceptance speech, highlighting the significance of the recognition for African music. "Being African and a musician is a whole new world and I feel like Billboard has been so supportive of not just African music but the whole scene and the culture," she stated.
"This has been a really great honor, especially given that African music is moving to heights that has never been seen before, and Billboard is one of the key players in moving that needle forward," Tems added.
Notable Figures Honoured Alongside Tems
The Nigerian star was not the only music industry heavyweight to receive recognition at the event. Veteran British singer Sir Elton John collected the Creators' Champion Award, while EMPIRE founder and CEO Ghazi Shami received the coveted Clive Davis Visionary Award, which was presented by Nigerian musician and YNBL label boss, Olamide.
The ceremony also marked the launch of the first-ever U.K Power Players chart, further cementing the event's significance in the global music industry calendar.
Tems' Historic Billboard Achievement
This latest recognition adds to Tems' impressive list of achievements. She currently holds the distinction of being the most-awarded African artist in Billboard's history. Last year, she made history by becoming the first Nigerian woman to be honoured at Billboard's Women In Music Event.
Tems' continued international recognition highlights the growing global influence of Nigerian and African music, with the singer-songwriter consistently breaking new ground for artists from the continent on the world stage.
