Ovie Ejeheri, a former Arsenal goalkeeper, has officially declared his intention to represent Nigeria at the international level, choosing the Super Eagles over England and Uganda.
The 22-year-old shot-stopper, who currently plays for Danish club FC Midtjylland, was eligible to represent all three nations – England (his country of birth) and Nigeria and Uganda through his parents' heritage.
Speaking to Flashscore about his decision, Ejeheri revealed that his choice was driven by personal conviction and his connection to his roots.
"I am a person that don't really think too hard on things," Ejeheri explained. "I know my heritage. Yeah, all the three [countries – Nigeria, England, and Uganda] invited me. England was a goalkeeper's camp like six years ago."
While acknowledging the opportunities presented by all three nations, Ejeheri was clear about where his heart lies: "Nigeria, for sure. I think for me, Nigeria is the team I've always wanted to play for."
The goalkeeper's decision follows a trend of players with dual or multiple nationalities choosing to represent Nigeria. Recently, Ademola Lookman, who switched allegiance from England to Nigeria, credited the move with transforming his career.
Ejeheri's commitment to the Super Eagles adds to the growing pool of talented goalkeepers available for selection, potentially strengthening Nigeria's options between the posts for future competitions.
