Former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his congratulations to Major-General Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar (rtd) following the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed his position as the Emir of Gwandu.
The court ruling brings to an end a protracted 20-year battle for the throne between Bashar and the deposed emir, Major Haruna Jokolo (Rtd).
Buhari's Message from London
In a telephone call from London where the former President is currently staying, Buhari expressed his heartiest congratulations to the Emir, who is also his friend and former coursemate in the military.
Buhari encouraged the Emir to build upon his achievements despite the challenging distractions from the prolonged litigation. "You have always worked for the betterment of your people and the nation, even under those circumstances. I hope you will continue to promote peace, happiness, and prosperity of the people in Gwandu Emirate and beyond," he told the Emir.
The former President added, "I thank Allah for this victory and pray for your long life and good health."
End of a Long-Standing Royal Dispute
The Supreme Court's ruling in favor of Bashar effectively concludes one of Nigeria's longest-running royal succession disputes. The case had attracted significant attention in traditional and political circles across the country.
Emir Bashar has continued to administer the affairs of the Gwandu Emirate throughout the legal battle, focusing on community development and preservation of cultural heritage despite the ongoing court case.
The Supreme Court judgment is expected to bring stability to the traditional institution and allow the Emirate to focus fully on development initiatives without the distraction of leadership uncertainty.
