Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has identified Barcelona stars Lamine Yamal and Pedri as the top contenders for the 2025 Ballon d'Or award, citing their exceptional performances throughout the 2024/25 season.
Speaking to EFE, Merino expressed his hope that one of his Spanish national teammates would claim football's most prestigious individual honor.
"I hope the [Ballon d'Or] goes to Lamine Yamal or Pedri. They're players we've in the [Spain] national team who've had an incredible season," Merino stated. "They haven't won the [UEFA] Champions League but they've shown all year that they're at the level of the best."
Nations League Success Could Boost Chances
The Arsenal midfielder further suggested that Spain's performance in the upcoming Nations League tournament could significantly influence the Ballon d'Or race.
"Hopefully Spain win the Nations League and it will give them a push. We also want to win it to give another title to Spain and for personal ambition," he added.
Both Pedri and Yamal were instrumental in Barcelona's domestic double last season, helping the Catalan giants secure both the LaLiga title and the Copa del Rey. Their consistent performances throughout the campaign have put them in strong contention for football's top individual prize despite missing out on Champions League glory.
The Ballon d'Or race remains competitive with several other players also in the running. Recent reports have highlighted various contenders, including players from France who have been tipped by fellow professional Ryan Cherki.
As the football calendar progresses toward the award ceremony, performances in international competitions like the Nations League could prove decisive in determining who lifts the coveted golden ball in 2025.
