The Abuja Muslim Forum has appealed to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, to reconsider the timing of a planned water supply interruption in Abuja, citing concerns about its coincidence with the upcoming Eid Kabir celebrations.

The appeal follows Saturday's announcement by FCT authorities about a planned upgrade of Abuja's water supply system, which would disrupt water services across the capital for up to two weeks.

In a statement issued by the Forum's Ameer, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Ajani, the organization expressed significant concerns about potential public health implications of the interruption during a period when water usage is expected to be particularly high.

"We appeal to the Honourable Minister of FCT, Nyesome Wike, to kindly intervene and reconsider the interruptions of water supply during the Eid Kabir celebrations so as to reduce the discomfort and likely health hazards that may emanate from the foreseeable but avoidable consequences," the statement read.

The Forum emphasized that the timing is particularly problematic as it coincides with "the peak period of Islamic biggest festivity at which water usage is very crucial and in high need," warning that this could pose "a risk to possible pandemic of diseases to the general public."

Acknowledgment of Infrastructure Improvements

While acknowledging the importance of upgrading the water supply system and commending Minister Wike for his ongoing efforts to transform the capital city, the Forum specifically requested that the maintenance work be postponed until after the Eid Kabir celebrations.

"Though the upgrade is commendable but we strongly suggest the deferment of the exercise until after the celebrations when the negative impact would have reduced and paled out," the statement continued.

The Forum concluded by expressing gratitude for the development projects being implemented in the FCT while reiterating their request for postponement of the water system maintenance.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the FCT Minister's office regarding the appeal. The planned water supply interruption, if it proceeds as scheduled, would affect residents across Abuja during one of the most significant Islamic festivals of the year.
