Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has explained that star striker Victor Osimhen was not included in Nigeria's squad for the upcoming friendly match against Russia because the player needs time to resolve his club future.

Osimhen, Nigeria's first-choice striker with an impressive record of 26 goals in 41 international appearances, was notably absent from Chelle's selection for both the Unity Cup and the June 6 friendly against Russia.

Despite completing a productive loan spell with Turkish giants Galatasaray, the 26-year-old forward was given time off by the national team coach, who cited the player's complicated transfer situation as the primary reason.

Transfer Window Distractions

Speaking to BBC Sport Africa, Chelle expressed his high regard for the Nigerian striker while explaining the decision:

"Victor (Osimhen) is, for me, the best striker in the world. For him, it is difficult to come for this game because he played a season with a lot of pressure."

The Super Eagles coach further elaborated on the timing of the international fixtures coinciding with the transfer window, adding: "The reality is, there is a transfer window. During this time, a player like him is not focused at 100%."

Osimhen's future has been the subject of intense speculation following his loan spell in Turkey, with several top European clubs reportedly interested in securing his services for the upcoming season.

The friendly match against Russia is scheduled to take place on June 6, with Nigeria looking to build on their recent performances in the Unity Cup tournament as they continue preparations for upcoming competitive fixtures.
